GLOBE Geometry Types
Geometry types in GLOBE reflect the form of case study site geometry that was uploaded, selected, or drawn in GLOBE during the case creation process to represent the geographic entity of the data presented in the case. The “Geom Type” field shows the automated classification of the case geometry. Below is a table describing the types of geometry classifications assigned by the GLOBE system with definitions and examples.
Code | Name | Geometry | Entities | Definition | Examples |
unknown | unknown | none | none | No information | preliminary, nonspatial, data entry for case: these should not be included in CASES. |
point | point | point | unk_point, gps_point | Single point location | GPS coordinates, other single point geographies |
mpoint | multiple points | multipoint | unk_point, gps_point | Similar to point, but multiple points considered as a single site. | multiple survey locations, sample points, populated places, GPS coordinates considered as a single site. |
polygon | single polygon | polygon | village, county, quadrat, plot, LS_scene, farm, field, parcel, park, protected, province, region | Single contiguous area | plots, quadrats, villages, counties, farms, etc. |
mpolygon | multiple polygons | multiple polygons | village, county, quadrat, plot, LS_scene, farm, field, parcel, park, protected, province, region | Multiple areas | a set of plots, quadrats, villages, counties, farms, etc. considered as a single site. |
line | line | line | river, stream, road | single line (may have many continuous segments) | streams, rivers, roads |
pline | polyline | polyline; multiple lines | multiple rivers, streams, roads | networks of linear features | Stream or road networks |
